A good deal of DS owners love their non-games, and they’re about to get a fresh influx as the long-running Tantei Jinguji Saburo murder mystery series will hit the US courtesy of Aksys Games, reports Shacknews. Developed by Data East, the series — creatively titled Jake Hunter: Detective Chronicles for the US — is described as an “interactive digital novel,” not unlike Cing’s sleeper hit Hotel Dusk or the Phoenix Wright games. So yeah, expect lots of reading.

“Jake Hunter: Detective Chronicles is the latest in a growing genre of games that places its focus on fantastic storytelling and character development,” said Bo deWindt, Aksys project lead. “It’s a great diversion for gamers seeking to test their powers of deduction and reasoning as opposed to their trigger fingers.”

The first game will hit our shores next spring for $19.99, and contain three different cases for armchair sleuths to solve.

Last week, we passed on a report that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 is using a new 65nm Cell chip, resulting in less noise, less heat, and less power consumption. But this week, according to Engadget, a Sony spokesperson denies the 65nm chip, claiming they’re still using the 90nm ones.

The report wasn’t completely off, though. The updated design reduces power consumption from 180-200 watts to 120-140 watts, and the company is planning to move to the 65nm processors in the future. Once the switch really does happen, we’ll let you know.

You may not follow the development exploits of Japanese developer Digital Kids, but it’s behind some games you’ve certainly seen in stores. Digital Kids is the mind behind some inexplicably popular DS titles like Hamsterz Life and Catz, published by Ubisoft as part of their misspelled-animals line of games.

Today, Ubisoft drew that crazy Japanese inspiration more inward, announcing that it has acquired the development studio, so all of those knitting rodents can be made and published by Ubisoft. Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft explained the acquisition.

‘Tis the season for company financial reports, apparently. Those following the beans have seen plenty of activity recently, as gaming’s movers and shakers throw down their collective cards and either mourn their fortunes or count their winnings with excited smiles.

One company who is definitely smiling today is Activision, who threw down its hand in the form of its second quarter financial report. Bottom line: whoever OKed the purchase of Guitar Hero should be down on their hands and knees kissing the ground right now.

To truly appreciate the craziness of Activision’s bumper year, one needs to play a little game called “then and now.” Thankfully, the numbers provided within the official report easily facilitate this.
